Plan It Document Receives First Reading After Extensive Public Hearing

The Plan It Calgary documents designed to guide our city to a sustainable future are one step closer to being realized. Starting June 23rd, 109 Calgarians took advantage of a chance to address City Council and express their perspectives on Plan It’s proposed Municipal Development Plan, and the Calgary Transportation Plan.

The first two days of hearings included 65 presentations in support of Plan It Calgary from a broad cross-section of citizens. Students, developers, consultants, professors, local business people, authors, bankers, doctors and retired Calgarians attended the hearings to offer their perspectives on the importance of a sustainable future for the community. In the final day of the public hearing, 44 presentations were heard from Calgarians opposed to the Plan It documents. This group was largely made up of representatives of the land development and building industry.

At the end of the final day, the Municipal Development Plan (MDP) passed its first reading by City Council – a significant endorsement of the proposal. Two additional readings will be required prior to the MDP being fully adopted by City Council. Adoption of the proposed Calgary Transportation Plan will be considered by Council at the same time as the second and third reading of the proposed MDP.

At the conclusion of the hearings, Council directed City of Calgary administration to review approximately 106 proposed amendments to the Plan It documents and to bring a report back to City Council.

The Plan It strategies encompass the input and direction of the more than 18,000 Calgarians who participated in the creation of The imagineCALGARY Plan For Long Range Urban Sustainability. Several imagineCALGARY Partners and leaders wrote letters endorsing the Plan It strategies, and attended the hearings to offer their support.

In addition to helping build a more sustainable city, the Plan It strategies are expected to generate $11 billion in infrastructure cost savings over the next 60 years.
